The Paphos coastline has it all — you just need to know where to look. This is our honest, tested guide to every beach worth visiting, with specific advice for families.

Alykes Beach — The Closest Beach to the Apartment

Alykes Beach is the municipal beach of Kato Paphos and the one you'll probably visit most. It's a 12-minute walk from the apartment — straight down toward the harbour and then along the coast — and it ticks every practical box for families.

• Water entry: Gentle sandy slope into calm, shallow water. Ideal for young children and non-confident swimmers.
• Facilities: Sunbeds and umbrellas (EUR 2.50 each), showers, toilets, changing rooms, and a lifeguard station staffed from May to October.
• Food: A small beach cafe serves drinks, snacks, and simple meals. Several restaurants are within a 2-minute walk.
• Blue Flag: Yes — the beach has held Blue Flag certification for water quality and safety for many consecutive years.
• Parking: Free municipal car park directly behind the beach.

SODAP Beach (Vrisoudia I & II)

Located just north of Alykes along the same coastal path, SODAP Beach (officially Vrisoudia Beach) is another excellent family choice. It's actually two beaches — Vrisoudia I (closer to the harbour) and Vrisoudia II (further north) — separated by a small rocky section.

Vrisoudia II is the better option for families. The sand is softer, the water is marginally calmer, and it tends to be less crowded than Alykes. There's a good beach bar serving drinks and light meals, sunbeds for rent, and a designated swimming area marked by buoys.

Coral Bay — The Best Sandy Beach Near Paphos

If you want a proper, wide sandy beach with turquoise water that looks like it belongs in a travel brochure, Coral Bay is your destination. Located about 12km north of Kato Paphos (20 minutes by car, or Bus 615 from the harbour), it's widely considered the best beach in the Paphos district.

The bay forms a near-perfect horseshoe shape, creating naturally sheltered water that stays calm even when the open sea is rough. The sand is golden and fine, the water is crystal clear with a gentle gradient — you can walk out 30 metres and still be waist-deep. For families with children, this is as close to perfect as it gets in Cyprus.

Lighthouse Beach (Faros Beach)

Lighthouse Beach sits at the southern end of the Kato Paphos coastline, near the old lighthouse and the archaeological park. It's a pebble-and-rock beach rather than sandy, which means it's less popular with families — but that's actually its appeal. It's quieter, the water is cleaner (rockier beaches always have clearer water), and the snorkelling is excellent.

• Water entry: Rocky — water shoes are essential. Not suitable for toddlers.

Kissonerga Beach — The Quiet Alternative

Just north of Coral Bay, Kissonerga Beach (also called Potima Bay) is the locals' answer to Coral Bay's crowds. It's less developed, less known to tourists, and has a wilder, more natural feel. The beach is a mix of sand and fine pebble, and the water is as clear as anywhere on the coast.

There are no sunbeds for rent here — you bring your own towel and umbrella, which is part of the charm. A small seasonal kiosk sells drinks and basic snacks. The swimming is good, though the sea floor is slightly less uniform than Coral Bay — water shoes help.

Pachyammos Beach — The Wild One

For those willing to drive a bit further (about 20 minutes north past Coral Bay), Pachyammos Beach near Polis Chrysochous is a genuine hidden gem. This long, wide beach stretches along the northern coast with the Troodos mountains as a backdrop. The sand is golden, the water is impossibly blue, and on a weekday you might have a hundred metres of coastline entirely to yourself.

It's less developed than the southern beaches — which is exactly the point. A few beach bars operate in summer, but the atmosphere is laid-back and uncommercialised. The swimming is good, though there's no lifeguard, so it's best for confident swimmers and families with older children.

Beach Season & Water Temperatures

The swimming season in Paphos runs from roughly May to November, though many locals and expats swim year-round. Here's what to expect:

• May-June: Water temperature 21-24°C. Comfortable for most swimmers. Beaches are uncrowded — the sweet spot.
• July-August: Water temperature 26-28°C. Bathwater warm. Beaches are busiest. Go early or late.
• September-October: Water temperature 25-27°C. Still warm, crowds thin out dramatically. Our favourite months for the beach.
• November-April: Water temperature 17-20°C. Cooler but still swimmable for the brave. Some locals swim daily year-round.

Essential Beach Packing List

• Sunscreen: SPF 50 minimum. The Cypriot sun is significantly stronger than northern Europe — you will burn without protection, even on cloudy days.
